April 2024 Newsletter
Hi everybody! I think I got the “Mental Health Awareness” thing a month early LOL, BUT, I had a few things rattling my cage. So, here it goes!
A Second Look at Mental Health Care: Breaking Free from the Medical Mold
Let's dive into something crucial today: the flaws of relying solely on the medical model for mental health treatment. Sure, it has its perks, but let's face it, it's not the holy grail. It's time to shake things up and explore some fresh, holistic approaches to feeling good. So, before you all go running to social media looking for a diagnosis, hear me out!
Navigating the Bumps of Labeling Everyday Life
And something else that's been bugging me: how the medical model tends to slap labels on regular human stuff. When we start calling every little emotion a disorder, we might miss out on what makes each person special and strong. It's ok to have a few bad days, and something comes up that makes you feel crazy. Hey guys and gals, It doesn’t always constitute a psychiatric diagnosis or a new medication.
Ditching Pills for a Whole-Person Approach
Let's flip the script on mental health care! While the medical model is all about popping pills and chasing symptoms, holistic care takes a different route. It's all about seeing the big picture, embracing the fact that mental health is tied to every aspect of life, and crafting personalized solutions that treat the whole you, not just the symptoms you're feeling.
Putting People First in Mental Health Care
Alright, let's get real about how we help folks with their mental health. It's all about going person-first. That means recognizing what makes each person tick— their ups, downs, and everything in between. We're talking about giving them the reins to their own healing journey, so they can take charge and make it happen.

Let’s Get Real About Mental Health and Social Media.
Alright, let's talk about how scrolling through our feeds impacts our mental health game. First off, social media's like a treasure trove of mental health info, right? It's like a one-stop shop for learning about conditions, spotting symptoms, and finding help when we need it. Plus, all those awesome campaigns and advocacy work? They're knocking down the walls of stigma, making it easier for us to speak up about our struggles and get the help we deserve.
But hold up, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, too much time online can make us think we're our own doctors, diagnosing ourselves with whatever's trending that week. And let's not forget about all the bogus info floating around! It's like trying to separate fact from fiction in a sea of emojis.
Then there's the comparison trap. You know, scrolling through people's highlight reels can make our own lives feel kinda mundane. That pressure to measure up? Yeah, it's not doing our mental health any favors.
So, yeah, social media's a double-edged sword when it comes to mental health. It's got its perks, but we've gotta keep our BS detectors sharp and remember that it's okay to step back when it gets to be too much.
In closing, there is nothing that pleases me more than watching all of you take those leaps and bounds for yourself. So, let's break down some more barriers to healing. As always, check out the website and catch up on my Camino Walk.
